  • Tumblr "Find Me" Directory" by tumblr user copperbadge: tumblr post & Google Form to add yourself to the list - Google Spreadsheet with recorded responses - Please note that anything you link here (as in associating one username with another) will be viewable to anyone who has the link, so don't link accounts you don't want associated with each other.

  • Python tumblr backup by bbolli/the Unmutual: https://github.com/bbolli/tumblr-utils/blob/master/tumblr_backup_for_beginners.md#tumblr-backup-101 - A utility to help you back up your tumblr to your computer. Bear in mind that if, like me, you had been on tumblr for years, the file might be HUGE, but I definitely found it worth it. It will take a few hours, probably, but can run in the background, so I would settle in and do something that isn't hugely demanding on your computer otherwise so that it can run without your computer going to sleep or turning on its screensaver as this will interrupt the process. There doesn't seem to be a way to start where you left off; if it messes up, as it did the first time I tried it, the only real way to go back and do it again is to go and delete the folder it made and start over using the instructions for the Command Prompt part only.

Please note that none of these are officially affiliated unless otherwise mentioned. They are given a once-over and endorsed only on the basis that they seemed active in the past year or so and helpful for the purposes of finding a place on Dreamwidth. If you know of a competing but also-good community, let me/us know. Communities

[community profile] 2017revival - A community established in 2017 to attempt to revive the use of Dreamwidth. Of course, tumblr hadn't become quite so determined to fail at that point, so it perhaps didn't gain as much traction as it had hoped, but it is still around. At the time of being added to this list, it had been updated in the past 9 weeks.

[community profile] addme - A general community for finding friends, perhaps geared more towards those who plan to post about everyday life or topics which are not always fandom-centric. At the time of being added to this list, it had been updated in the past day.

[community profile] addme_fandom - A fandom-based community for finding friends who share fandom interests with you.

[community profile] add_a_writer - A community to find friends who also write. This is a friending-only community and is not a place to directly post your work or get critique.

If you know of a similar community you would like to be linked or you are the owner of one and would like to affiliate, please comment below or message [personal profile] prixmium.

This post was directly inspired by [personal profile] nanila's post for the same purpose with LJ-to-DW identities.

This post is to help you link your tumblr identity/identities to your Dreamwidth account. You can link multiple tumblrs to one Dreamwidth account on this list but not the reverse as that would get crazy. Please follow the template instructions so this list is possible for one person to easily maintain.

Template and Instructions

Step 1: Copy the Template in the Textarea Below

Step 2: Replace DREAMWIDTHUSERNAME and TUMBLRUSERNAME (twice) with the appropriate usernames.

Step 3: If you want to link more than one tumblr identity (say you had sideblogs or something) then copy and paste the tumblr url code to your heart's content (within reason) below and tack it on to the end. If you were the type to change your URL with your current fixation, then I would recommend just using your most recent OR most well-known username, making a note of it on your tumblr itself, and then just trusting people.

Step 4: When you comment on this post, please wrap your pasted information in this tag again so I can copy-paste what YOU wrote in code form.

The List

Use CTRL+F to find the tumblr username you are searching to best-navigate. The list is in alphabetical order by Dreamwidth username. Names beginning with a numeral are at the bottom of the list.

One of the best and only things that tumblr has on other blogging platforms is its format for displaying photo- and gifsets in an attractive and uniform way that we have become accustomed to. I decided to try to soften that blow by making a few templates for you to import your gifsets here and to continue to make them.

Instructions:

1. Copy and paste the code below into your post. You will probably want to preview a few times to make sure that the photoset is positioned beneath your icon so it will display at the true center of the post. You can tweak anything you like about the template.

2. Upload your images to an image hosting service like imgur. You can probably even hotlink your images directly from tumblr, for now, but I'm personally not sure about the stability or reliability of that! Up to you. Replace the image links between the quotation marks where you'd like the images placed.

Example:

3. If you wouldn't like for there to be a 4px "piping area" between your images, erase this from the code: cellspacing=4. You can also make it more or less by changing the number.

4. To add or remove image cells, look for the following section of HTML. You can copy it from the box below and add it in as you like, or you can erase instances of it from below. The preview is set up for 10 images which was tumblr's maximum, but you can do more or fewer if you like!

If you use, please comment! As soon as I figure out how to mix the dimensions, I will try to make a tutorial about how to do that, too~

Hello all! I noticed over on [community profile] addme_fandom that a lot of people coming over from tumblr who'd never been on a similar website where confused about the concept of a Subscription/Access Policy. I wrote up a little blurb that I gave to a couple of people, posted on my personal blog, and am now posting here for wider reference, hopefully.

Dreamwidth lets you control what is on your "Reading Page" (which is the closest thing to a 'dash' you have here - it shows the most recent 1000 entries from the last 14 days, so it DOES eventually end) and who gets to read what you post with a few different settings you can learn to manage.

You can subscribe which means that you get to read all the public posts on that journal on your Reading Page.

You can grant access which means that you are giving that journal permission to read journal entries which you mark as Access List Only (I think, something like that) on the privacy setting down near the post button. This was an update of an old LJ thing where you could make stuff "Friends Only."

You can make even more strange access filters if you like over time. Like, I dunno, "only friends with an unhealthy obsession with cheese" or "friends who aren't afraid of spiders."

In the case of communities, like this one, tat have open membership, you can join without subscribing, which is what I did, so that my Reading Page won't be just posts from this community even though I want to be associated with it and easily access it.

You can see a bunch of helpful stuff on your own profile page that might help you understand this stuff further!

I hope this helps you understand!

Please note that much of this post is written from my memory and reflects my personal opinions. Feel free to make suggestions and corrections below. Feel free to discuss these issues with me an each other. I will make changes as feels appropriate.

tumblr and Dreamwidth are different kinds of websites, and I think it might be worth considering some of the patterns of behavior that became normal on tumblr, in my experience, versus what one might expect a healthy and enjoyable experience to look like on this website.

I have written about this extensively in my first post over on my main journal account, but one of the main things I noticed in my time on tumblr from 2011 until now is how much less interactive and vocal people became over time, even with the implementation of the messaging system. It seemed to me that in my first days on tumblr, I could participate in "ask memes" and writing prompt memes and so on without much problem, even when I had 200 or fewer followers. Over time, however, even when my follower count grew to over 800, I found that I could reblog requests for interaction all day long and that no one but my dearest mutuals would ever respond, and even they only responded some of the time. tumblr became a quiet place in spite of all the constant dash movement if you followed many people, unless you happened to be a very popular blog in some particular fandom or another. I have my own theories and thoughts about why this might be, but feel free to discuss your own opinions below.

In any case, I think that it is important to bear in mind that this type of blogging requires more personal effort than tumblr's system of "tag maybe, reblog, go." However, it doesn't have to be a painful amount of effort. You can be an active participant on this website without writing a thousand words for every post. However, it will not be any fun whatsoever if you only ever post and don't look at your Reading Page and interact with other people. You cannot expect to be at the top of a pyramid where a lot of people respond to your posts without any mutual effort on your part, as was a pattern that I saw expected on tumblr by some an which often worked.

There is no system of "notes" or "reblogging," here. Rather, your interaction must be through commenting. However, you can hold much clearer conversations through commenting here than on tumblr.

Another difference here is the amount of control you have over who sees your stuff. When you "Subscribe" to a journal, you are "following" them and will see all of their public posts. When a person subscribes to you, they are "following" you to see all of your public posts. When you "Grant Access" to someone, you are giving them permission to see posts that you mark for your Access List only, which is like the first layer of protection. You are able to create even more restrictive access filters within your access list if you like. You might use this for personal matters or for extremely niche interests - it's all up to you. You are also able to make completely Private entries which no one can see but you. Here is the official FAQ page on it.

I would say that you should probably be very willing to give subscription a try with people, but you should bear in mind that you are volunteering to either read or scroll through all their public posts on your Reading Page. If you're here, you should expect to read things and to interact with them. How much is up to you, but mutual subscriptions are how you're going to feel not-alone. Your Reading Page is going to be a lot slower than your dash was, but it might give you an opportunity to engage more closely with fandoms and people that may mean a lot to you.
